Grand Canyon National Park, a double World Heritage Site due to its outstanding natural and cultural qualities, contracted with PaleoWest in 2009 to carry out an archaeological inventory in unexplored parts of its North Rim Unit in preparation for much-needed forest thinning.
Faced with a short field season, difficult terrain, and extensive undergrowth and deadfall in the untouched environment, PaleoWest archaeologists were able to complete the survey, record new sites, and re-evaluate previously recorded sites that included Archaic hunting camps, historic sheepherder features, historic dendroglyphs, and the remains of early transportation efforts into the Park. PaleoWest completed the project on time and on budget, with a commendation from the Park Archaeologist on the quality of its report.
