Congrats to Project Director R.E. Burillo on Co-Authoring Preservation Archaeology Blog Article!

PaleoWest project director and archaeologist, R.E. Burrillo, recently co-authored an article with K.C. Carlson from Augustana University for the Preservation Archaeology Blog, hosted by the nonprofit organization, Archaeology Southwest. 

“George McJunkin: Standing at the Intersection of Black History and American Archaeology” is an insightful take on the historic contributions of a turn-of-the-century Black cowboy in the Old West.

Written in celebration of Black History Month, this article illuminates how we interpret the past, and how past biases–whether cultural or racial–might not have allowed for the entire truth to be told. 

Burrillo and Carlson demonstrate through an artful narrative that credit for discovering the Folsom site belongs to George McJunkin, thus bringing a little bit of color back to a white-washed history.
