Archaeological Services We Can Help You With
Read below to explore our wide range of archaeological services.
Archaeological Evaluations
In one of the first stages of fieldwork, we conduct archaeological evaluations to establish the significance of cultural resources across project sites. Building a clear picture of the landscape, we conduct site record reviews alongside data curation agencies. Our experts then conduct inventories of cultural resources in the field and make recommendations to oversight agencies on site significance.
Under PaleoWest’s expertise, your project will receive critical cost and logistical planning information and remain compliant with federal, state, and local regulations.
Archaeological Surveys
Unexpected cultural site discoveries tend to cause costly delays, shutdowns, and fines for developers across multiple sectors. Our archaeological surveys avoid this by searching for, identifying, and documenting significant resources before you break ground..
By embracing technology, PaleoWest has pioneered the use of tools including aerial mapping, 3D modeling, and GIS during surveys. We know the potential for costly delays that regulatory compliance processes can cause for your project. With these tools, our surveys provide a fast and cost-effective way of meeting your deadlines and planning needs.
Archaeological Excavations
Following the use of nondestructive evaluations and surveys, our experts may carry out an archaeological excavation. Under the watchful eye of regulatory agencies, this can be a highly technical and intensive undertaking.
Our experts are equipped to navigate your project through the unique challenges an excavation can present. Moving at a pace that meets your project’s schedule and objectives is our top priority.
Compliance Monitoring
Our compliance monitoring experts will oversee your project from day one and ensure progress is being made on schedule within the scope of regulations and project plans.
Thanks to our team’s wealth of experience, problems are spotted before their impact becomes costly and irreversible, resulting in potential penalties and delays for noncompliance. Compliance monitoring facilitates your project’s progression and provides the essential feedback and needed reporting to save you valuable time and money.
Wherever you are, whatever your project, we’ve got a regional expert who can help.
Simply put, we’re here to help you achieve your land development and management
objectives. We’ll push your major projects forward quickly and cost-effectively while
expertly guiding you through the archaeological and regulatory challenges.

Rivendell proposes constructing a rental apartment community complex within a 12.08-acre parcel of private land in south Phoenix. The area was historically a pecan orchard with a farmhouse, sitting entirely within the boundary of the NRHP-eligible site of Las Canopas, a prehistoric Hohokam village site occupied for approximately 800 years.
Rivendell engaged us based on our excellent reputation among developers in Arizona to complete data recovery projects on or ahead of schedule. As a result, we were able to complete data recovery investigations and obtained clearance for the parcel from the CAO well over a month ahead of groundbreaking on the project, allowing Rivendell to commence construction on schedule.
To meet a previously impossible deadline for a land development deal in direct conflict with a large, federally-regulated prehistoric archaeological site, PaleoWest leveraged its digital PaleoWay system. This compressed the fieldwork phase of the project from a typical 18 weeks down to 10 weeks. Furthermore, the clearance report was submitted the day after fieldwork was completed and was approved by the lead federal agency, two state agencies, and tribes overseeing the project within 30 days, with PaleoWest’s scientifically important work on the Hohokam village site receiving high marks all around. The project stands as the nation’s first large-scale, all-digital archaeological excavation.
“Paleowest is considered one of EDF’s most trusted consultants. Their management and staff are always professional, responsive, and highly regarded as experts in their fields. Our Desert Harvest and Maverick projects, located in Desert Center, CA, were EDF’s first large-scale projects on BLM land. Paleowest consulted on these projects from the very beginning all the way through Commercial Operations. When any issues arose on the site, Paleowest was always there to assist us on the reporting and mitigation required under our agreements. EDF looks forward to awarding Paleowest many contracts in the future.”
